Area: Kuwait is a small country by size: 17,820 square kilometers (6,880 square miles); approximately the size of the State of New Jersey

Population: 3,832,009 including approximately 1.19 million Kuwaiti citizens, 2.47 million non-Kuwaiti nationals, and 100,000 stateless persons

People: Kuwaiti 32%, other Arab 27%, South Asian 37%, other 4%

Languages: Arabic (official). English is also widely spoken

Religions: Muslim population estimated 85% (Sunni 70%, Shi’a 30% among Kuwaitis), with sizable Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist communities

Currency: Kuwaiti dinar

Government type: Unitary hereditary constitutional monarchy

U.S. – Kuwait relations:

The United States and Kuwait established diplomatic and economic relations in 1961 at the time when Kuwait gained full independence from the United Kingdom. Historically speaking, the two countries also had ties based on shared values, democratic traditions, and institutions. Kuwait is considered an important partner in U.S. counterterrorism efforts. It also provides assistance in regards to diplomacy and intelligence to fight terrorism and block financing of terrorist groups.
